Abstract

|
As a phenomenological research on the reconstruction of the meaning of residential space for elderly women who lost their spouses in old age, this phenomenological study aims to explore how elderly women who had long lived with their husbands in single households face residential challenges, due to their spousal bereavement in old age, and how they are coping with the challenges. Twelve participants were selected to carry out in-depth interviews and analysis according to the Colaizzi's strategy in phenomenology, and exhaustive and essential descriptions about the phenomenon of their experiences are achieved. The study identified that the residential space is being reconstructed into the meaning of ¡°a space dealing with a sense of loss¡±, ¡°a space rebuilding a sense of autonomy and coping with living¡± and ¡°a space empowering a sense of ¡®person in environment¡¯¡±. Suggestions include social welfare plans for the aged to meet their residential needs for self-sufficiency, Aging In Place, and communal housing for elderly women with spousal bereavement in old age.
